Entry level Professional kick drum microphone
The Shure PGA52 is an entry level dynamic microphone with cardioid polar pattern designed for recording bass instruments, specifically, a kick drum. It replaced the older (now discontinued) PG52.
The frequency response is nicely tailored for the kick drum, providing a natural sound reproduction, but it also works very well with other bass instruments like cajon. The sensitivity is 1.75mV/Pa, which is optimal for isolating the mic from other instruments in ambience.
Some people may consider it to be a budget alternative of the Beta 52a, however the PGA52 is more recent, costs 1/4th the price but certainly not 1/4th the performance.
According to users, its more flexible for playing different styles than the beta 52a and sounds great for live performances as well as recording in a home studio.
At the end of the day however, the recording is only as good as the source it is recording. You can definitely get a decent sound with the PGA52 as long as your kick drum/other instruments sound good before putting the mic on it.
